From LaToya Irby, your Guide to Credit / Debt Management
The key to "winning" with credit cards (if there is such a thing) is knowing the rules. By winning, I mean being able to use your credit card for cheap (or free), avoiding fees, and (possibly) earning rewards.

7 Steps to Keeping Your Credit Card Free
With annual fees, finance charges, late fees, and foreign transaction fees (if you travel), using a credit card can get expensive. But why pay when you there are ways to use a credit card for absolutely free?

Change Your Payment Due Date
If your due date conflicts with your payday making it hard to pay your credit card on time, change your due date. That'll make it much easier to avoid expensive late fees and an interest rate hike.

When Not to Use Your Credit Card
Sometimes you can stay out of credit card trouble, by just keeping your credit card in your wallet instead of swiping. For example, if you're not sure whether you have enough available credit, don't swipe until you know for sure.

Watch Out for Costly Credit Card Tricks
Not all credit card issuer practices are transparent. For example, the minimum variable interest rate can keep your APR from falling below a certain point even if the index rate (e.g. prime or LIBOR) falls.
